In the build up to this summer’s European Championships, there is a somewhat strange aura surrounding the England team as they prepare to take on Europe’s elite. Media coverage is a far cry from the usual patriotic rhetoric and there is almost no talk of England being amongst the potential candidates to lift the Henri Delaunay Trophy on July 1st. It feels rather like the build up to Euro 2008, where for the first time in 14 years England didn’t qualify for a major tournament. Euro 2012 marks the 20 year Anniversary of Denmark’s 1992 European triumph against all the odds. Greece’s 2004 win has perhaps overshadowed the Dane’s achievement in terms of international football upsets, but as fairy tale stories go the ’92 side still lives long in Euro memory. (more…)
