Will
Football Analyst, Spain
Background
I was a first-year PhD student, when one day I noticed Football Radar's job advertisement in my Twitter feed. There's actually quite a crossover between being a research student and being an analyst; you have to conduct systematic research, make informed choices and provide evidence for what you say. Of course, you also need to be interested in your subject to the point of obsession. It's a way of life.
Working at Football Radar
As an analyst working on La Liga, my attention is focused on Spanish football. Since starting in July, with each passing day I can feel myself becoming more and more immersed in the work.
You quickly build up a relationship with the teams and the players in your league as you follow their day-to-day progress. It's a personal thing, much like writing a thesis.
Forget about associating football to 'stadium vibes' and weekly hangouts at the pub. At Football Radar you are a researcher and you will have to enjoy being nerdy with every little detail. From watching games in the lower leagues to reading training reports of a fringe player to preparing match previews and tactics for El Clásico, you're on top of everything that happens.
Like being a research student, there's a certain pride to be had in knowing more than almost anyone else about one particular thing.
